2 Slot Vs 3 Slot Gpu

# PCI Express Versions: 1.0 vs. Unlikely RAM’s Slot, you actually can’t tell the difference between PCIe Slot generations by just looking at it. On some motherboards, it’s written on the PCB but generally, you won’t find it until you check your motherboard’s specification online or on the box. Re: which RTX NVLink SLI Bridge, the 3-Slot Spacing or the 4 slot 2019/02/07 13:03:59 stevenburkey On my motherboard, the slots are wide apart. They are not at a normal spacing.

So I currently have 2x 5870 cards populating the first and third PCI-E slots - 16x/empty/16x/empty.
When reading the R3E manual, when using 3x GPUs, it recommends that I use the first, third, and fourth PCI-E slots - 16x/empty/8x/8x.
Is this configuration required? Will using the first 3 slots cause any problems, ie. 8x/8x/16x/empty?
The reason why I ask is because this is a water cooled rig. Using that 4th slot will be difficult with the Koolance full cover motherboard block I am currently using. Also if I use the first three slots, does that mean I need to plug all my monitors in the third GPU instead of the first one?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

My board is a Asus X570 Formula VIII im running BIOS 1001
I have a Nvidia 2070 Super
When i go into the BIOS under Advanced>OnBoard Device configuration PCIEX16_2 bandwidth shows as X8 Mode (the other option is Auto)
Under Tool > Graphics Card information > GPU Post
It shows Slot : PCIEX16_2 as 'Running at x8 Native' - it also says 'install the GPU in PCIEX16_1 or PCIEX16_2'
my GPU is installed in slot 2 (PCIEX16_2)
Both Slot 1 & slot 2 i presume can support x16, hence their naming PCIEX16!
Why is my GPU only running at x8, its directly plugged into the motherboard.
